Florida is truly the laughing stock of the country. Congrats on your new residents, though. I was worried no one would replace those teachers who left!

@MushuChupacabra @wintermute_oregon I’m mixed on a take like this. He did make the state a lot better, but it’s to such a degree that people have swarmed the state and people are now complaining that the cost of living is too high. Between that and the authoritarian/pseudofascist way he likes to address culture war issues (banning handing out #Nazi pamphlets in public, punishing #Disney for being woke, etc.), I don’t think #DeSantis should be too closely emulated.

The progressive USAtoday couldn’t find stats for 2023, so relies on 2022…

California’s population grew in 2023, halting 3 years of decline, state estimates:

The nation’s most populous state is growing again, ending a trend of population decline that had dogged Gov. Gavin Newsom through much of his tenure.

California gained just over 67,000 people last year, the first increase since 2019, according to an estimate released Tuesday by the state Department of Finance.

DeSantis marketed Florida with his own brand. Some things are outlandish, like the banning of fake meat. People do move to a state for the politics they agree with. People vote with their feet. CEOs change corporate headquarters because of politics. Talking with people who came from Hawaii, they decided to leave after the pandemic because of Draconian lockdowns. It seems the lockdowns really triggered the visible divisions on what is considered responsible government. You pay the expenses of living in the city, then you deal with authoritarian government that shutdown basically all your freedoms. That was the last straw for many. Florida did not do that and people saw that. The taxes are lower and the laws, for the most part, seem sensible. Disney threatened the marketing of the DeSantis brand and for that, it was taken to the woodshed. Ron does things to prove he is a conservative leader. No fence-sitting from him.

Some things are outlandish, like the banning of fake meat. He banned lab meat. I wouldn’t consider that fake meat. You can buy fake products such as Beyond or Impossible but not lab-grown.

I don’t really have an opinion on lab-grown meat at this time. It should be a safe product but it doesn’t sound appealing to me.

Overall, I like DeSantis, but he has some quirks I don’t like. That isn’t going to stop me from moving to Florida, though. I will end up paying about half of what I pay in Oregon for a home and a large reduction in taxes as well. Oregon can’t seem to grasp why high income earners are leaving.
