I find this statement pathetic in its ignorance to the shared responsibility of all the signatories to further violent escalation. Saying that they want Israel to defend itself is correct, but combining this with the notion that Israel would be the one setting the conditions for a peaceful and integrated Middle East is absurd.

First of all it is absurd because the US with its invasion of Iraq, as well as its support for the ISIS and Al Quaida supporter Saudi Arabia has done nothing but deliberately destabilize the Middle East.

Second of all Israel has not shown any move towards creating a peaceful solution with the Palestinians. Instead it has aided the terroristic settlers to drive Palestinians in the West Bank off their land and many times just murder them. The rhetoric of Israel has shifted and became more hostile and violent well before the attacks from Hamas and Israel let its fundamentalist settler groups defile one of the most holy sites of Islam, the Al-Aqsa mosque this year.

All of this happened while western countries stood by, at best making a small reminder to not kill civillians and escalate tensions. If the western countries had drawn clear lines and gave real diplomatic repercussions to Israel, they could have forced Israel to not sabotage the peace process and making tangible steps towards finding a peaceful solution.

But these countries stood by and did nothing, full well knowing that the tensions will escalate into violence.
