This as we in the US have opened the floodgates on sports gambling in the past decade or so. The amount of ads during sports games for gambling has increased dramatically.

The thing is, booze and cigs are out and it’s likely gambling is next. But the question is what insidious industry or product is going to fill the void. The gambling industry is willing to put in the big bucks but who will be there to cover those losses when inevitably it is banned?

No extra points for Saudi or Middle Eastern oil jokes. They’re not slick.

Not joking, but oil companies/big polluters would probably be the next in line. Although I don’t really think it’s necessarily going to be as bad a company as betting sponsors, maybe like banks or car companies which aren’t as bad.

Good, fuck gambling. Look at cigarettes, no more ads and the usage has dropped like crazy. I don’t know any young people under 20 that smoke.

In my country, advertisements involving tobacco and alcohol are banned. You won’t find any ads involving them. Even if there are sponsorship, they’re shown in the name of something else. “Carlsberg Glasses.” Something like that. Brand name and something else like water, soda or glasses. Not gonna lie because it is effective. I go to the liquor store and I haven’t even heard half of the things they’re selling.

And tobacco advertisements are straight up banned. They can’t do anything. The government took it a step further and added a nasty picture of a dude with throat cancer and lung cancer in every box of cigarette no matter the brand. Except the imported ones. It’s totally NSFW and people get disgusted by it.

This is why we need government intervention on gambling

What happened with smoking didn’t happen overnight

It started with them banning advertising, next came the smoking ban in public places, then we had the warning labels put on packs and now (in Scotland anyways) cigarettes are not even allowed to be visible behind the counters in shops

Sadly a lot of the gambling industry have gotten ahead of things already, leveraging streamers and shit to indoctrinate kids into the habit.

Gambling is fucking ruining all sports. I don’t need the live odds and the parlays on every fucking sport. It’s so fucking annoying.

It’s crazy to me that campaigns like this, as well as the Prem banning betting sponsors on shirts soon, are so prevalent in football but in the US legal sports betting is just getting off the ground. It’s been proven to be more detrimental than good for society in the UK but there’s no discourse around it in the US.

I hate how Reddit thinks about this. Like oh something’s bad for overall society so let’s ban everyone from it. Why don’t we ban alcohol. Make the speed limit 10 everywhere. Ban McDonald’s. Cultural authoritarianism is surprisingly popular around here.

AFC Wimbledon’s shirt sponsor is more evil than gambling though…
