Squirrel and Hedgehog finale

Squirrel and Hedgehog (Korean: 다람이와 고슴도치 Taramiwa Kosŭmdoch’i) is a popular animated TV series from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, with 32 episodes released between 1977 and 2012, and more episodes in the works as of 2025. Parts of Squirrel and Hedgehog were also dubbed with a greatly revised plot and released as Brave Soldier or Soldados Valientes in English and Spanish respectively. The series concerns the squirrels and hedgehogs of Flower Hill as they resolutely defend their homeland from invaders, hence the title.

Tonight we’ll be watching the last three episodes of the series to date. “Finale” is maybe the wrong term to use, since this isn’t a finale so much as just the last three episodes which have been created, but I couldn’t think of a better term. In any case, I’m looking forward to finally seeing the goddamn sexy fox lady character, who I thought would’ve shown up a lot earlier in the series just based on the memes, but is apparently only found in two episodes towards the very end of the show. Officer Yeou is truly Squirrel and Hedgehog’s Kaworu.

Anyways, like last week, the extra time after the Squirrel and Hedgehog will be filled by some fanime, namely…

The medicine

What is fanime?

A fanime (etym. blend of fan + anime) is basically when someone makes an anime-style cartoon show by drawing frames in MS Paint; compositing them in Windows Movie Maker with pirated music, stock sound effects, and dialog recorded in one take on potato microphones; and posting the result to YouTube. This isn’t necessarily accurate of all fanime, but the throughline is in any case that fanime is a form of democratized amateur animation combining anime aesthetics with “Internet Ugly”. The style is most associated with the Western anime fandom of the mid-2000s through mid-2010s, where it was often difficult to distinguish sincere fanime shows from parodies of the genre.

Tokyo Magic Star first half + Yay! Cat Evan’s Future

Tonight’s fanime were both created by Kawaiiouija / Mari (he/him), who also created Terrance Terribly Troubled, a top-tier fanime we watched on April 15. Yay! Cat Evan’s Future is a 2014 parody fanime he created that never continued past its three-minute first episode. No plot description available, so I don’t know what to expect from it. Tokyo Magic Star is Mari’s chef d’oeuvre and an influential fanime overall; Kisaka Toriama (creator of Tokyo Crystal Mew) is a fan of it. It is a 2012-2018 shoujo fanime with idol, horror, and magical girl elements. Season 1 released between 2012 and 2018 with 10 episodes; a second season was announced but put on indefinite hiatus after Mari’s voice dropped and he lost the ability to voice the characters. Due to the length of season 1, my current plan is to show the first half tonight and then the remaining episodes over the next few weeks.

Plot description from Fanime Realm:

Sakura Masayuki is a normal 15-year-old girl who wants to live out her dream of becoming an idol. After passing an audition and getting signed to a company with her friend, Umi Matsuoka, the two see the world change slowly around them. The two then find out they have been chosen as sacrifices to Satan and have to become magical girls to stop his evil duing [sic] or else! However, they will not give up without a fight. Sakura, “Death”, and Umi, “Depression”, will now try and fight to save themselves from being killed. Along with their new friend Ichigo Kojima, “Despair”, and Tomomi Usaki, who is also “Death” from years earlier, the four will try and defeat Satan’s crew or else the cycle will repeat itself again.
