Got to be the right man for the job hasn’t it?
I think Gatland had it too many times also. Not that he isn’t a good coach, but just nice to see something different in a lions team.
To me the lions are like the barbarians. Its more about the values of rugby, the tour, the enjoyment, the coming together. Rather than just getting wins. We can all strive for wins supporting out home team but the lions (like the barbarians) is something a little bit different, a little bit special.
I half thought Schmidt would get it for taking on the ozzies. But Farrell a great choice too. Hoping that Toonie gets another look in also
Schmidt could have been a good choice, didn’t think about that.
Toonie might have made a more enjoyable coach than Farrell. Feel for these coaches sometimes because sometimes it’s just based on the quality of players you have more so than the quality of the coach.
South Africa and Ireland were both able to out-coach Scotland to get decisive victories in the world cup pools last year.
While it is true that both countries have more money, depth with their playerbase, etc. - and Scotland are particularly lacking in the frontrow - I think that the scorelines were poor considering we were ranked 5th in the world.
The Toonie brand of rugby needs to be more flexible in the future. Ideally we could focus on defence while maintaining all the fun attacking plays.
Still disappointed the rumours of Townsend going for the attack coach position in the French national setup came to nothing. Reckon that could have been fun.
