Kind of disappointing for me for 1 reason. When I heard of Google Glass, I thought it might be great for the niche application of having it start recording when you’re looking at your kids or pets in case they might do something cute. Because by the time they’re already doing it, by the time you’ve brought out your phone (or other camera) to record it, it’s already done.

High-ish res camera glasses that you could start recording with via voice command or a quick button touch would have been a godsend for me to record my dog or various neighborhood dogs and cats doing cute things before they were totally finished with or almost finished with them.

You don’t need augmented reality hardware for that, though. I’m sure that wearable cameras are easy to get ahold of. Police-style bodycams, for example.

Doesn’t look weird at all if you’re constantly running around with a bodycam like the worst undercover cop.

I mean, people reacted to glasses with a camera on them too. That’s just gonna be part of recording everything.

Heh, I remember Neal Stephenson talking about that in Snow Crash, how people would dislike having people with recording gear near them.

Looks like Google is cutting costs from most of the projects, to save the funds for developing AI.

If Google loses the AI war, it is no longer going to be the de-facto search engine.

I have already been using Bing Chat a lot more than Google.

I am so upset. I was saving up to buy some Focals by North. They were going to be nearby for some fittings. I was pretty much ready to go when all of a sudden they cancelled.

Turns out they got bought by Google and Google just shut them down unceremoniously. I was hoping they’d be an actual product I could buy at some point again… but nope, Google’s now shutting them down, too. Buying things just to prevent any possible competition, as usual…

Too bad. I was hoping to use Google Glass to access the Metaverse for all my “being advertised to” needs.

What’s funny is I just had a conversation with myanager about how XR is still a niche market. Companies are actually trying to deploy mass management solutions for these devices. Google focusing on the core software and possibly making an Android-like OS for XR could be exactly what this tech needs to push it into mainstream like smartphones
