YouTube is currently running what it describes as a “small experiment globally,” warning users to toggle off their ad blockers and avoid being limited to only three video views.

The day YouTube stops me from watching videos with an ad blocker on is the day I start ripping every single godsdamned video I wanna watch on youtube with yt-dlp and watching them the mother-fuck-offline lol.

this is actually a good idea for preservation efforts. leaving such a huge library of videos that has been around since the modern internets founding with no backups feels dangerous because it is at the mercy of a for profit company which at any time can choose to just nuke their archives.

see what is currently happening with reddit many users are overwriting their comments which (good fuck reddit fir trying to make money from user provided free content then going around and charging the people that maintain the platform) but its also sad to see because now this huge repository of solutions or anecdotes of real issues that affect or have effected people will soon be gone.

and a loss of knowledge is always a tragedy.

for one someone should defenitely make sure to back up this

[email protected] and other similar communities might be of interest, they do archiving projects like this.

I saw a complete archive of everything posted to Reddit on one of the datahoarder communities as well, it’ll have copies of all those deleted and overwritten comments tucked away in there for future recovery.

I wouldn’t mind paying for YouTube, but their current subscription price is extortionate given what I’d get out of it vs. much more premium streaming services. It’s funny how their ‘Lite’ subscription trial seems to have disappeared off the face of the Earth - I’d probably go for it at that price.

I had premium get bundled in with my music subscription before they killed it off. They offer nothing Firefox and ublock origin do better. Now I’m going to just need another add-on.

Google Play Music got axed for a shitty YouTube run app with less features.
It had support for uploading and storing local music so if you didn’t pay monthly you still had access to music you “bought” on other platforms. It was about the only thing that they put out that was worth paying monthly for.

Ah ok, you are talking about the transition from Play Music to Youtube Music. I still use Youtube Music and I have to say I am fine with it, the ability to add videos from Youtube to playlists is useful when you find some obscure cover of something. But I never uploaded my music in the past and I understand where you are coming from if you liked the feature, also I have a family split plan.

Yeah, this is the problem. If you watch YouTube every day, sure, I get it, storage and bandwidth cost money. But if you’re an occasional user who watches a few videos a week, no way is the subscription worth it.

I think it depends on what you want. If you want high-budget entertainment stuff, yeah, you can certainly do better, but if you’re looking for non-entertainment information on something, YouTube is really preferable.

I’m honestly surprised it took them this long to start doing this. It always seemed weird that they were allowing adblock users to get away with it.

Honestly, as much as it pains me to say, I would pay for something below Premium. Like YouTube Plus or whatever. So I could get reduced ads, but not the crazy 3 minutes of ads they’ll probably go to. I think Premium is $12 USD a month right now, I would want something at $6 (preferably $5). I don’t think it’s worth it for me to pay $12 for the amount I watch YouTube, but some of the info on YouTube is worth paying a little something for them to host it. I’m definitely going to start downloading some videos now though in case YouTube gets worse and worse…

I set my location to a different country to get a cheaper rate. It’s a pain the in the ass to set up but might be worthwhile. My family plan is like $4.

$2.99 a month for an un-skippable ad at the beginning of a video is the threshold for me. Anything more than that and I’m just not interested. Make the length and cost of the ad itself commensurate to the length of the video it precedes. I hate watching videos that are chopped up into bits with thoughts interrupted at random.

you can save videos with jdownloader and watch them offline. It’s great for preserving videos that might get deleted as well.

Has anyone seen this on revanced yet? I’ve not seen any chatter on the original subreddit regarding this yet

Revanced stopped working for me a few weeks ago now. It will just play like the first minute of a video, and then get stuck on an infinite loading. Searching the web for that issue, I got the idea that my account was flagged somehow. I’ve tried uninstalling ans reinstalling and it doesn’t help. Tried it again after a few weeks to see if it had started working again, no luck.

I’d recommend something like NewPipe instead. It also allows you to download the videos and can choose the video/audio quality before doing so.

I just watched several videos with adblock on and it didn’t give me any messages or anything. Maybe it’s regional?

I believe it’s currently in A/B testing, so some random people will get it while others won’t. I haven’t noticed anything either.
