The Echo Mini is pretty good and they’ve been updating the firmware to add stuff for a while now. My biggest gripes with it would be there is a hard limit of a little over 8000 songs even if there is enough space for more on your SD card. It’s something to do with how it indexes the library. It also doesn’t really support playlists, although I think the most recent update allows you to play everything within a genre so you could do some shenanigans with that.

The pots and pans have to be ferromagnetic. Aluminium cookware doesn’t work and it looks like stainless can be hit or miss depending on how it’s made. It’s not a big issue unless most of your cookware doesn’t work on it.

Climate@slrpnk.net•New York City Housing Authority to Replace Gas Stoves With Battery-Backed Induction Stoves in 100 Apartments Under Energy-Efficiency Pilot Program2·3 months agoThe article says they are 120v induction stoves so they don’t have to do updates to the electrical. The battery also allows them to work if the power goes out. For how long? Idk.
The real question is how does pressure factor in? I don’t care what kind of preparations you make. If you end up at the bottom of the Mariana trench you won’t survive 30 seconds. You just go from biology to physics instantaneously.

4·3 months agoThe damage of a bike hitting a person is much lower, but that isn’t the only factor. I think there is a disconnect between whether a person on a pedal bike is a pedestrian or a road vehicle. I’ve seen people ride through crosswalks like a pedestrian even though they are technically supposed to dismount here if you’re on the sidewalk. It’s harder for a driver to anticipate a bike since they are generally going much faster than a pedestrian (not a great excuse for hitting one though). You can absolutely break the speed limit in a school zone on a bike and I’ve heard of people getting ticketed for it. On the other hand, I’ve seen people ride on bike lanes on the road act like idiots. I’ve quite a few people riding against the flow of traffic even though there is a clear arrow indicating which direction to ride. It wouldn’t hurt to have more people aware of the laws regarding commuting on bikes. On the other hand, a license could make it more difficult for the people that would normally rely on a bicycle as a form of transportation. Maybe it’s mainly a US thing?

ThePunnyMan@lemmy.ziptoHome Improvement@lemmy.world•Upgrading ungrounded two-prong outlets to grounded three-prong?
2·6 months agoI’m not an electrician but I’ve been in a similar spot. If you have non computer stuff that has a ground prong, you can replace a two prong receptacle with a 3 prong GFCI outlet and not hook up the ground. You just need to lable the outlet as “No equipment ground”. GFCI outlets generally come with these stickers since it is a common retrofit. If you hook it up right, any outlet that is GFCI protected downstream could be replaced with a 3 prong receptacle without a ground and would have to be labeled “GFCI protected” and “No equipment ground”. Even though there isn’t a ground, you are protected from electric shock by GFCI. You shouldn’t plug a computer into an outlet like that since computers use ground to filter noise from their power supply and require an equipment ground. If you need an equipment ground, you would need to talk to an electrician.
I remember hearing about System76 a while back. They manage Pop!_OS which comes preloaded on their stuff. I don’t know much more than that. If you are mainly looking to replace your laptop because you don’t want to switch to 11, you could always try out Linux on it with a live USB. Basically you format a thumb drive to act as a boot drive. There are resources online on how to do it and it’s pretty simple. It doesn’t mess with your current install. If you like it, you can fully install it later.

17·7 months agoIt’s more than just a water level issue. As I understand it, the Amoc is responsable for warmer water cycling up to the coasts of western Europe resulting in warmer temperatures than they would normally get at that latitude. It would change the temperature and weather experienced there. Hank Green did a video talking about how it could potentially affect Ireland about a month ago.
I think that’s true for the arts in general. Unless you are both extraordinary talented and are able to get lots of people to recognize that talent it’s hard to make a living in the arts. Art is a wonderful thing to be passionate about, and it is an important part of life and society despite how some people tend to downplay its value. It’s rarely stable work. There is a reason why there are tropes like the starving artist or actors waiting tables.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Anyone know a good modern day MP3 player?
4·7 months agoJust keep in mind you can run into issues with some of the highest capacity cards. There are limits to how much music an ipod can handle depending on the generation which aren’t immediately obvious. Dankpods mentioned it in one of his older videos.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Anyone know a good modern day MP3 player?
4·7 months agoIf you’re on a Mac, I think ipods are still recognized and you can use their software to sync and manage music. You can only sync over music you own so no apple music obviously.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Anyone know a good modern day MP3 player?
2·7 months agoFiiO makes some pretty good stuff. I love my BTR5 to use with some of my wired headphones. I recently bought an Echo Mini cause I liked the retro look and wanted something dead simple to just play music and it’s just ok. No support for playlists which is interesting. It also has a hard limit of around 8000 songs. Their android based stuff seems popular though.

It wasn’t just that. I used the first party app so the API changes didn’t affect me. It was how bad they handled the whole situation that made me lose faith that reddit was going in a good direction. That thread “addressing” the changes and concerns was brutal.
