4·24 days agoI think you are right, and I find the thought of raising someone with the intent to keep them ignorant is gross.
As a teacher, one could not bring up the subject, but one could encourage critical thinking.
If I had the opportunity, but with these constraints I would say:
“How do you know they are bad (or X opinion)? The Church thought Galileio was wrong about the sun being in the center of the solar system, and scientists thout Harlen Bretz’s theory about the Missoula floods sounded too biblical. Anyone can be wrong; so it is important to gather information and decide for yourself.”
And yes, I believe a child would understand the point, even if they don’t get the references.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How do I prevent someone breaking and entering a house?
31·27 days agoIt depends on whether your adversary is motivated and equipped, your resources, and what visibility you would like to permit.
Let’s suppose you have a poorly equipped adversary, a couple thousand to spend, and you want it to be invisible.
When a door is bashed, the wooden jamb breaks at the lock. So you could go bash resistant device, I believe there are inserts that make bashing significantly harder. Or you can go with a steel door and steel jamb.
For windows, a sheet of polycarbonate glued to the outside should make them resistant to rocks and small arms fire. You should be able to break the glass and kick out the polycarbonate in the event of a house fire.
Check your slider door that it can’t be levereged upward and removed while shut.

News@lemmy.world•Millennials are giving up on the thought of ever buying a house and experts estimate fewer will become homeowners
63·1 month agoI have a suggestion.
TLDR: High density, owned housing, professional management, restrictions on owning other properties.
To avoid HOAs misusing funds, allow people to own, and build high density: build apartments for sale, to be managed by corporation. Corp is funded by reasonable fees set before construction as a percentage of value of property. Apartment owners can vote to fire incompetent managers, otherwise, managers are free to choose how to effectively run complex. Salary is fixed.
To encourage a builder to take on the project, we have 20-50 people sign up to buy apartments. They have to put down a refundable deposit of $100 to get on the list, and $5000 to the builder (applies to down payment) when building starts.
Deed restrictions, created before breaking ground, prohibit ownership of an apartment by:
-
any corporation
-
any individual that owns another home or is on a corp that owns rental properties (excludes REITs if shares owned is below 5% market cap)
-

151·2 months agoIf democracy is bad, why do dictatorships feign it?
The Wealth of Nations made convincing arguments that mercantilism wasn’t the most effecient system. Paid laborers cost less than slaves. Hoarding [gold] bullion makes it abundant in your country, thus less valuable.
It may be time for the next system. The manifesto will need arguments that appeal to one’s pragmatism rather than sense of charity (48 Laws of Power, Law 13, Robert Greene).

1·2 months agoThe news clip said “…after many years of not paying his mortgage.” {0:45}
I am inclined to agree with you, because there have been cases of elderly people with pending evictions and unopened social security checks on their counter. They were simply too senile to pay their bills. {People I (mostly) Admire, Podcast, ep 100, interview with Sherriff of Cook County}
This case is not that. He chose not to pay, he chose to shoot at people, and he chose to kill himself.
The way people behave in airport bathrooms bothers me. The bathroom gets cleaned 5 times a day and people still use a mountain of tp on the seat and flush the toilet with their foot like a bunch of homo zombies with norovirus just rode the handle.
But if you must do the above, in any restroom with soap, wash your hands afterwards. You’d want your doctor to.

Here’s a possible solution that I haven’t thought about much:
One could start a non profit corp or co-op to compete with for profit corps–like a grocery store. Poor people are the employees, so one can redirect retained earnings to them as bonuses, higher education, and training.
Once one has enough non profit corps around the us that everyone loves, one can lobby or place politicians to outlaw for-profit corps.
