Fuck AI@lemmy.world•5 second AI video for 3.4 Mega Joules of energy
1·3 days agoHot take, but this would be fine if power production was clean.
Microwaves use a crap-ton more power than a stove, but we use them anyway.
This was me today. Also I’m visiting China and man is it clean (at least where I am)

Linux@programming.dev•I traced $2 billion in nonprofit grants and 45 states of lobbying records to figure out who's behind the age verification bills
1·3 days agoInside scoop having talked to the company meta uses. Since they use face identification to check age, my belief is that it burdens them with biometric data that the federal government wants rights to. That puts them in a precarious situation if they don’t want to share said data, or can’t make enough off it for the risk, just like problem Discord had. Much safer to have ad-focused data.
An 8 switch relay, old Pi, and 8 hardware store outlets can be had for not much more. I did that and let PiKVM control my outlets directly.
This is the back of my 10" rack before it was cleaned up. Lots of custom work on this that I’ll be posting a page on my site about when complete.

@tal@lemmy.today in case you are interested
I built an 8 outlet version of those with relays and wall outlets for… a lot less.

Can you provide context for this?
A matrix bridge would be nice and could open up a large user base.
Good tip, but if you are hanging a TV… plug them in before you hang said TV.

Technology@lemmy.world•Meta's latest legal wheeze is to insist that pirating books is fair use, actually. And it might be working.English
1·9 days agoIf the ruling goes the wrong way, like with many cases like this (drug use is a good example), it won’t help those in the past. However, it will open a door for everyone in the future.
My guess is every DCMA entity on the planet has already sent this judge a letter saying that allowing this defense is a terrible idea. I am honestly torn on this one since there are so many unknowns, and if Meta loses it will mostly be publishers that benefit vs authors.
It’s like a self-hosted web archive, but if you pair it up with Ollama/LMS and a visual LLM like Qwen, it will analyze, OCR, and tag any memes you share to it.
