Anytime AI does aliens, it reminds me that ai cannot make new creative things, it can only make the average of all the aliens that have appeared in popular media.

I get what you’re saying. I think you are describing a logical consequence to how the image generators work. It learns what a fish is by seeing millions of fish images… to it ‘alien’ is not logically different than a fish… it does not understand that anything could be alien, or that it implies something distinct from what it has been trained on.
Ironically… to get the generator to describe something truly alien, you would probably have to avoid using the term ‘alien’ altogether, and probably giving it a starting point (blob-like, bird-like, fish-like, etc).
I imagine that you could get your desired effect, though it might take more work… perhaps by asking chat-gpt to describe with great visual detail (but limited words) something novel, and then feeding that into an image generator.
