What’s something that’s popular but you’ve never done?

I’ve never been in an uber.

I’ve never eaten quinoa or at least I don’t think I have. I’ve certainly never cooked it.

I prefer that my food is handled by the minimum amount of people before it gets to me. Also I’m not interested in supporting such an exploiting business model.

If their families are eating well, that means the customers are not.

Something doesn’t jive in that equation.

When I hear that the food has been picked up by a driver but then never delivered. The customer then gets their money back. Someone gets that meal.

I’ve found wrong deliveries on the doorstep when I leave in the morning several times. Straight to the bin. 12 hour old Maccas chips do not appeal.

I’ve done this - because my employer was paying. It was interesting, the food costs more than if you were buying it directly, and then you pay the driver on top of that. Our regular pickup order was something like $30 more expensive with Uber, and you had to wait a lot longer to get it. I honestly don’t understand why people use Uber Eats. It’s cheaper and faster to just go get the food yourself.

The reason it’s more expensive, cause UberEats takes a cut from the list price. A lot of places added cash to make up for the loss.

I guess it’s good if someone doesn’t have a car or a mode of transport, but then I’d just eat something local or venture out further as a special treat.

You’ve never been in a pool or an ocean or just never learnt to swim?

Nothing wrong with that. They have adult swim lessons if you’re interested. They are more common than you think.

This is a project for summer 2024/5. You owe this to yourself. Being able to go for a dip in the ocean and/or river (clean) is just lovely when you can do so safely. Swim lessons available at most council run baths/pools at very low cost. There’s no need to be all super competitive (unless you want to), but basic water safety is something EVERYONE should know. Swimming is great for fitness too and doesn’t crap out one’s joints or back or feet.
I really miss the days of the Herald/Sun Learn to Swim campaign - it was a huge factor in public safety round water. As the recent spate of drownings over the last 2 years has shown. I still have my framed certificate from that program.

I’ve really wanted to for aaaaages, just always put it off for some reason or another. I think mostly due to embarrassment.

Fuck it. I’ll give it a proper go this year.

Heck, even if you don’t learn how to swim, you should learn deadman float and treading water just incase.

This one is amazing! Does this mean you didn’t grow up in Australia? Because I can’t fathom getting through childhood here without swimming. Even in Melbourne.

I grew up here but my father was a lunatic so I wasn’t allowed to do anything growing up that wasn’t study. No friends till high school, no swimming, no school camp.

Took a long time to get over it.

Then what did you do while your class was in swimming lessons? That’s some next-level stuff to take your kid out of a class teaching an essential life skills. I didn’t even realise it was possible to opt-out of school swimming lessons.

I’m trying to figure out how he justified this. Was it that he had to pay a couple of dollars for the swimming lessons? I honestly can’t figure out why you’d deny this to your child.

I don’t remember learning to swim, and my own kids were in the pool as soon as they had their 6-month vaccinations. Aussie kids grow up in water.

I have never : had food and/or shopping delivered. Been in an Uber or similar. Watched Game of Thrones. Watched LOTR. Subscribed to a streaming service. Subscribed to or used Facebook/Tiktok/Twitter or whatever it’s calling itself now. Driven a non-manual motor vehicle. Had a manicure/pedicure. Dyed my hair. Gotten a tattoo. Used a face mask. Read manga. Used a scooter. Used a skateboard. Worn a hat backwards.
And it’s been 40+ years since I last owned a television or wore makeup.
I think I’ve failed the pop culture exam.

I’ve dyed my hair and I’ve used a face mask. I’ve driven my husband’s auto once to the shops and it felt odd because I didn’t know what to do with my left hand. Everything else on your list I agree with.

Agreed about autos. It feels super weird not having to shift. Not an issue on a highway, but around town I stomp the floor and grab air left. Even worse if the indicator switch is on the other side.

Yes. You put your hand down on the gear stick and go no, put your hand back on the wheel, hear the motor revs so you put hand back down on the gear stick. It ends up a weird little game while your foot’s trying to find an imaginary pedal.

I just read through everyone’s list and the only one which I haven’t done is get a tattoo.

To add my own… and I’m not sure if this falls under “popular” but I’ve never broken a bone. Never gotten anybody pregnant/had any kids. Never sky dived/bungee jumped. Never drank more than a sip of red wine. Never tried meth or heroin. Never killed anybody. Never been to Japan. Oh actually there’s one… I’ve never punched anybody in the face.

Wow - from going through these replies, I’ve done just about everything. The only popular ones so far that I haven’t done is any drugs, skydive (would love to, though) and gotten a tattoo. I think @bull has got a warped perspective of what’s popular (No, I haven’t killed anyone).

Ooh! I have one! I haven’t been to Europe! I want to go some day, though.

Get a tattoo of that time I skydived over Paris and landed on some hapless person in the street, killing them?

It sounds like I’d be in for a very boring, loooooong holiday after that exciting couple of minutes.
