Australia (generally) got rid of guns because a single man killed 35 people and wounded 23 others, including several children over the course of a few hours.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_Arthur_massacre_(Australia)

And while this is absolutely tragic, I still think they made the right decision because someone like this killer could easily have killed as many as Martin Bryant if not more.

Australia has had 13 mass killings since late 1990s, including this most recent tragedy, none of them at that scale. Compare that to the U.S., which had over 600 mass shootings in 2023 alone.

This is a tragedy, make no mistake, but thankfully, in Australia, they are rare.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Five people have been killed in a knife attack at Westfield Bondi Junction shopping centre in Sydney’s east on Saturday afternoon, NSW Police say.

Nine people, including a small child, were stabbed by a man in the centre and some are in a critical condition.

NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke said authorities believe the man acted alone and there is no ongoing threat.

A police inspector, who was nearby, was directed towards the man by witnesses, and she shot him dead after the offender confronted her.

“I want to thank NSW Police, emergency services and first responders and the community for their bravery in the face of this shocking incident,” he said.

"All of a sudden the front doors were closed and in a matter of seconds we heard some gunshots and got sent to the storage room at the back of the shop.
