Speaking to my therapist last night. We were talking about my anxious mind craving distractions and the amount of screen time I’m racking up on my phone. He was talking about just sitting, no noise or anything and just taking in whats going on around us. I’ve never been so proud of myself cause I stopped short of shouting “RAWDOGING! Gen Z call it rawdogging when you just sit on a flight and do nothing!”

    Fuck i’m weird ey.

This is something I’ve been working on for about 18 months now, and it definitely helps.

When I get home from work my phone goes in a different room and I don’t touch it at all. No laptop or iPad either. I usually read once our 5 year old is in bed and the dishes and chores are done and I get the chance to sit down.

I flew to North Qld and back a few weeks ago, no devices or screens.

My ‘online’ time is during breaks/lunch at work and that’s it. I deleted Instagram a couple of years ago and haven’t had Facebook since 2008.

I drive to work and back with NOTHING playing, no podcasts or music or anything, 3-4 hours of driving per day.

Being ‘in the moment rather’ than being attached to a screen or ‘content’ has really helped. Although I’ve found it DOES make me irrationally angry when I walk around (or even am at other family member’s houses) and everyone is glued to their screens. Not to mention the at least 1 person a month I see watching YouTube while driving on the freeway…

They call it rawdogging? (I ask, as a Gen Z person)

Also hard relate. I’ve noticed I’ve been watching YouTube and scrolling through Reddit to try to numb anxious feelings.

Reddit only seems to exacerbate my anxieties. Too much bad news coming from the world, condensed into a toxic cesspool of misogyny, racism, and arguing in bad faith.

I prefer YouTube, but avoid the comments.

And yeah apparently some people use “rawdogging” to describe going without their phone/music/whatever when travelling or doing something - which is just… No.

Rawdogging is a gross term to use colloquially in those situations. But language is language and youth will create slang as they always have done since language became something utilised by humans for communication.
