It’s not good.
The lyrics are interesting, and I like a lot of the themes that the songs approach, but this album is just so boring.
The production is weird, not that unique in the genre really, but still. Being weird and different isn’t enough to make good music.
I feel like there’s nothing to hold on to, every song feels so similar, like a never-ending buzz. The album isn’t even that long, but it feels like HOURS…
There are some nice cuts, like FaceTime, but most of the songs are just billy rapping with that monotonous tone of his, non-stop. And there’s 17 tracks on this thing, yikes. His lines aren’t even that good, he keeps rhyming every fucking line. Makes everything sound like that lyrical miracle stereotype. Ew. DOOM from Wish.
This album feels like staring at a wall while the washing machine is running.
What do you think?
Best song: FaceTime
Worst song: Soft Landing
Rating: 2/5
I personally love this album. Might even be my album of the year so far. I never blame people for not liking Billy Woods’ music though bc it is demanding and I’m often just not in the mood. I am surprised to hear someone call Kenny Segal’s production boring though. The subject matter of Woods’ bars here, contemplating the end times, romanticizing his melancholic solitude while on tour and evaluating his relationships, just hits for me and makes it easier to listen to. I’d disagree with calling him a ‘lyrical miracle’ type because he doesn’t compromise on the content of his lyrics to jam in SAT words or obnoxious internal rhymes. And don’t even get me started on the features on this album they’re all gas, especially ELUCID’s verses. Billy Woods has become my favorite rapper over the past 3-4 years with this wildly consistent and prolific run and I really hate to hit you with the “it’s an acquired taste” line but his style really has grown on me more than I thought it would. This albums a 10/10
I agree on the features actually. I despise Danny Brown’s music but his feature on here was very listenable.
This is the first and only thing I’ve ever listened to by billy. I might give some of his other stuff a try, maybe it’ll grow on me! Thanks for sharing your thoughts :D
This album and Aethiopes are two of my favorite recent rap albums. Billy woods’ verses are good enough but never that impressive to me though. For me it’s the production and the features that make both of these albums great. The ELUCID verses, ShrapKnel on Babylon by Bus, Boldy James on Sauvage, Quelle Chris, Danny Brown are all awesome features.
