Yeah, dictators are never good, and Soviet-style repression is horrific on top of that.
At the same time, leaders often contain multitudes, and I think most of us exposed to the Anglosphere here are at least somewhat aware of Castro’s crimes. I think Castro is a good example of one of the reasons why autocracy or strongman regimes are such a terrible idea - even ordinary men become tyrants, and willing to pursue their own prejudices and interests to horrific ends, to varying degrees, when all power is concentrated in their hands.
We must always remember that, no matter how ‘aligned’ a leader may seem or even actually be with our desired policies.
I only post the reminder due to the large amount of apologists his regime receives. It’s mostly from .ml, grad, and hexbear types of course, but still good imo that his legacy doesn’t escape his crimes and atrocities, he should be just as celebrated as any other totalitarian dictator.
Just a reminder, he was shit for human rights, Jailing dissidents and journalists arbitrarily, and sent LGBT people to labor camps (at least not death camps, only 72 out of 35k were tortured to death and only 180 committed suicide so that’s good.)
