They’re a registered club with official recognized “public benefit” status. They were specifically created to have a non commercial and community / society based choice for code hosting.

Forgejo instance.
The official Forgejo instance, to be clear (Codeberg are the organisation that forked Gitea and created Forgejo).
IIRC someone else forked gitea and later Cideberg took them under their (legal) wing. Either way, great projects.
