Attorney General Pam Bondi is directing federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty for Luigi Mangione if he is convicted of the murder of CEO Brian Thompson.
In this case it’s just the rich punishing a plebeian for daring to challenge them, in the hopes of they make his punishment terrible enough everyone else will be too scared to rise up.
But in answer to you astute observation that the ‘pro-life’ people love the death penalty, the reason is simple: to these people, being ‘bad’ isn’t something you do, it’s something you are.
So to them it’s not a break in internal logic at all. They gave the pure, innocent baby a chance, but they turned out to be a Bad Person, so they must be punished, because that’s what you deserve for being a Bad Person.
This is why they favor punitive jailing and killing criminals instead of trying to reform criminals; criminals are Bad, and so they will always do Bad Things.
It’s also why they do stuff like try to get rid of abortion. If a woman got pregnant from ‘sleeping around’ then she’s a Bad Person and deserves to be punished by carrying the child to term.
To further your point, this is how shit like Al Franken happens.
In general conservatives see themselves as generally good people who occasionally do bad things but it’s okay because that’s still a good person who has good intentions. Whereas in their eyes people who are in out groups are bad people who are always going to do bad things no matter what because they have bad intentions.
He was quickly ousted from his position as a popular and respected Minnesota senator during early #metoo, for accusations that you’d never imagine a Republican resigning over, allegations in fact that have failed to take out other more core-party Democrats (Andrew Cuomo comes to mind, he still has a millionaire warchest and is running for NYC mayor this year with full support of the DNC). Democrats fall easily for the virtue olympics.
God can commit genocide and torture because His actions are beyond human understanding. God is the creator of Goodness, so every action he does is Good by design. I personally view God only as Good because he is powerful, but I view Jesus as Good in a more genuine and human way.
The powerful like to take the parts of religion that allow them to live in a simplified world. A world in which they are Good, like God, not by action but by power and nature.
They forget that sinning applies to the powerful, just like it applies to the weak. Everyone deserves to be forgiven in Christianity, but only after you’ve paid for your sins. People like the “being forgiven” part, but not begging for forgiveness in a brown sack covered in ashes part.

It’s a perversion of Christianity.

God can also give people permission to commit genocide. Just ask the Amalekites. Oh wait…
Don’t forget that prison labor is constitutionally protected slave labor!
