“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven." - The Gospel According to Saint Matthew, 5:14-16

We as socialists have identified that there needs to be actual, tangible change in the world. The only way to achieve this change is by revolutionary struggle. These revolutionary works, because they are works, they are actions that take great struggle and effort, inspire not only our fellow socialists, but all the people of the Earth. Our Lord stated that we must be lamp, shining bright for the entire house, or like a proud city on top a hill. We can not just let our work in advancing socialism, advancing the mission of Christ (love, peace, and equality, just some of the main tenets of the socialist ideal) be relegated to the forums of the internet, or inside the classroom, or within our own small socialist circles. No, we must go out in the world and give socialist flavor to it, to meet the working people of the world where they are at. Christ calls us to be “the salt of the Earth” in a verse before the above passage. Even small changes and small helpful efforts can make a massive difference. Simply even educating people who show interest in our movement helps to flavor our world.

These are just some of my early morning thoughts on this passage, one of my favorites. Post your own thoughts in the comments if you’d like, or maybe simply engage in some silent reflection.
