Mine is Silent Hill 3. Its subject matter revolves around the fears of a teenage girl, like death of a parent, puberty, unwanted pregnancy (with a demon fetus, no less), mirrors (THAT ROOM shivers), and stalkers. The atmosphere is so oppressive and I cant play the game without having something else playing in the background, its that horrifying. I managed to finish Silent Hill 2 last year, which was like conquering my own fears. One day, I’ll finish SH3. One day.

Subnautia is torture. I gave it another try after I got co-op going but my buddy quickly bailed.

I really really wish I could play that game but this fear of something coming out of the depths and killing me is too much. It’s just a game ugh

Such a beautiful game but I couldn’t stand being on edge the whole time. I’m stressed enough as it is.

Playing on the Nintendo Switch was an interesting experience, with a rendering distance so short that by the time anything dangerous pops into view it’s already too late.

Not quite an answer to your question, but if you enjoy horror games but don’t want to be too spooked yourself, I highly recommend the OhItsRobinM channel on YouTube and Twitch. She plays horror games and is absolutely unphased. She makes them bearable to watch for me.

Outlast is 2spooky4me. Got pretty far in, but then just couldn’t get past the dread.

Never played it, but Alien: Isolation is a cool-looking game I’m not going to even bother attempting.

Mine is SOMA. Not necessarily because anything about the gameplay is scary, moreso just because the ending is so… difficult, that it’s painful.

SOMA may be my second favourite game of all time. I highly recommend it to everyone. Even if you don’t normally do scary games (like me, I’m a total wuss), there is a safety mode where the monsters cannot kill you. This makes it tolerable enough for even people like me to experience the game, and its amazing atmosphere and story.

I cleansed my SOMA trauma with The Talos Principle. Very similar themes but viewed through a hopeful lens.

I didn’t play much horror, but I always thought the FEAR games were badass. Lots of jump scares, crazy storyline, and solid game play. Also loved the Deadspace series… Not having a HUD but finding clever ways to provide information to the player was pretty ground breaking at the time.

Oh man, Silent Hill 2 and 3 are some of my favorite games, the atmosphere is just perfect. I started playing Resident Evil 7 in VR and the part at the very beginning where you go down into the basement and I just noped out and haven’t tried it since. Will probably give it another go eventually…

Silent Hill 2… I’ve finished so many horror games including RE7 in VR, but for some reason I get to the apartment building in Silent Hill 2 and nope out.

@Drewski I noped out of RE7 also. RE8 and the RE2 remake I could handle, but 7’s opening was too much for me. The first person thing plus the VR thing eek.

There is a game so fucking terrifying that I won’t even buy it although I’d totally play it. That Dragon, Cancer. It’s a deeper fear than I can ever explain.

Jesus I go to horror games for a different brand of horror. I can’t imagine voluntarily subjecting myself to this, but I can actually imagine wanting to make it if I were a parent who had to live through that.

Even though I’ve finished the first three at least once, Fatal Frame games are terrifying. I love them dearly, but I literally can only play any of them for maybe an hour before I have to turn them off.

I don’t know if I would be able to finish one these days. My anxiety is way worse than when I was young.

Edit: To be more specific, the sound design in FF games is too good. The atmospheric sound effects, the background music, the ghosts voices. It’s so creepy. The way the ghosts appear out of nowhere, the subject matter of folkloric rituals.

It’s all just the perfect storm of terror. The anxiety gets to me after a time.

Siren is another series I would hate to play right now.

Resident Evil 7 in VR was too much for me. I made it just past the garage battle and then gave the game away.

I tried a game called “don’t knock twice” in VR. Cheesy basic ass game, but I couldn’t handle it lol. Basically like the first thing you do is grab a phone off a couch and then you hear a knock at a nearby window. I took the headset off and never touched it again. Nope nope nope.

That is absolutely the scariest game I’ve ever played and it’s not even close. And that wasn’t in VR even

I tried playing Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice and although the gameplay was fun the story was just a little too dark for me. I quit about halfway through bc it just wasn’t a fun experience.

You know I thought I was going to be unique with this one.

This game gave me so much fucking anxiety that I couldn’t finish it. The dark atmosphere and the constant whispering in your ear made me feel like I was straight up hallucinating. It fucked with my head so hard.

I struggle with progressing through Amnesia. It’s such a cool game with an intriguing story but when I really get into it, it disturbs me to the core lol
