I don’t find it misogynistic, really (not saying it isn’t, just that I don’t see it that way). It’s just plain stupid, like it was funny the first time someone did it because it was creative and new and twisted the word in a smart way.
But in the last week I’ve seen at least 10 different communities with “porn” in the name and neither of them was porn. You’re not being witty, you’re not being funny, you’re just copying something that’s become quite embarrassing precisely because everyone copies it.
You copied a patriarchal thing that was on Reddit as well. Copying does not make a thing ok just because you copied it. People are just saying that these types of community names shouldn’t be a thing. I say they shouldn’t be a thing because they are 1. Off putting 2. Patriarchal in nature and coming from a less inclusive less accepting space. (Ie 2009 era Reddit)
I’m not suggesting it is/was ok or not, but replying to you saying

So we were not being trying to witty, not trying to be funny. We migrated our community from Reddit and took our name with us. At the time (5 yrs ago) it seemed like a suitable name, as it relates a lot to mapporn.

You mean we copied it 5 years ago. As users of both /r/earthporn and /r/mapporn
