Hello Swedish friends! I hope you’re all well (:

So, I’m a young Portuguese guy and I was wondering what Swedes should think of Portugal and the Portuguese. I did some research, but found almost nothing. So I decided to ask here.

I’m very curious to hear your answers! (:

I was there in Quarteira this summer, loved the warmth (somwtimes a bit much around 40°) and Quarteiras coastline was very beautiful, especially when the sun sets. I also want to go see Lisbon sometime.

Idk, mostly all I know Portugal for is for their history of colonization and being Spains “little brother”. When I was there most people were relatively nice, but damn a lot of people really don’t give a fuck when they drive and are ALWAYS in a rush, but appearently it’s just the Nordics that are the odd ones driving too safe from what I’ve heard.

I travel to Algarve at least once per year. I greatly prefer Portugal to Spain, the portuguese are far kinder.

Most Swedes probably don’t know that much about Portugal. I think Spain is a more common tourist destination, so Portugal kind of gets lumped in with Spain. Although there are a small number of Swedes who choose to retire in Portugal, especially before the tax rules were changed in 2022.

Personally I’ve been to Portugal (Lisbon) once and I loved it. Very friendly people, great food and wines and such a beautiful city. I was there during the pandemic, though, so there were fewer tourists than normal.

There’s also the whole “Portugal can into Nordic” meme, where Portugal seems to alternatively rank among the Nordic countries or the Balkans/Eastern Europe in various statistics.

It’s funny you mention that, because most foreigners think that Portuguese from Portugal sounds Russian

From my personal experience most Swedes know very little about Portugal and just assumes it’s sort of similar to Spain, but perhaps even poorer.

“Even poorer” 😂 I can confirm Portugal is poor, but Spain is not.

Southern Europe = Poor and chaotic in the Swedish mind. It dosen’t matter if it’s true or not, it’s how Swedes view the world.

When covid was spreading like a wildfire in northern Italy (which is more or less on a northern European level of development) and, unknown to everyone at the time, already had started to spread in Sweden, our top governmental epidemiologist basically said “oh, but that’s… like… Italy… you know (not a real developed functional state like Sweden, Denmark, Germany or the Netherlands)”.

Southern europeans are viewed as… well… maybe not outright lazy but at least ineffective.

I of course speak generally and not every Swede hold these views, but I would say that they are a part of our cultural understanding of the region.

Did you meant you resent that remark? Or do you actually look like that remark?

          It’s a play on words.

The original saying is of course “I resent that remark” but in this case, I’m a swede that knows next to nothing about Portugal, hence I resemble that remark.

I think most Swedes think of it as a place for vacations, catch some sun, maybe surf, and eat fresh fish, seafood and drink vinho verde. Most that have visited have probably visited the Algarve region, then Lissabon and Porto.

I would say that the most press Portugal gets in Sweden besides Ronaldo is that your drug policys is used a lot as an positive example in debates regarding narcotics.

    What do you mean?

If you don’t look rapey or stabby you’re gonna be fine 🤷‍♂️

Edit: Or you just mean the general reputation of Portugal?

Oh! Well I’m no expert but as far as I know the Portuguese do not have a bad rep for any reason, everyone I’ve talked to who have been there loved it, and you are often used as an example for why we should decriminalize most drugs ☺️

It’s an old song lyric which is a cultural classic. I can’t recall their name, Hjalle och Heavy maybe their name was.

I know that things have been a bit difficult in your country too, due to the housing crisis and uncontrolled immigration. I wish you all the best!

Visited Lissabon and Cascais and loved it. Very chill atmosphere all around. Too chill compared to what Swedes are accustomed to. We accidentally flooded the apartment from the bathroom. We were very surprised by the building standards = no drain in the bathroom and no water stoppage to the hallway. And we were more surprised by the reaction by the owner (it had happened before, no problem, we just lost the downpayment)
