    The point is not to turn a profit. The point is to look like a winner who’s making big boy moves and thus justify your insane big boy salary. Investors losing money is someone else’s problem (especially since the ones of them who matter have taken trouble to insulate themselves from the worst of the damage when the bubble pops and everyone loses their jobs).

      It’s providing a service for millions of businesses of all scale, at a cost they are happy with, which pays AWS infrastructure off. AI data centres are very much not doing this.

      Considering IBM only deals with large scale research and business services these days—which is why we don’t know them as a home brand anymore—Im going with those guys being right.

      All the hyperscalers together could potentially add about 100 gigawatts, he estimated, but that still requires $8 trillion in investment—and the profit needed to balance out that investment is immense.

      “It’s my view that there’s no way you’re going to get a return on that, because $8 trillion of capex [capital expenditure] means you need roughly $800 billion of profit just to pay for the interest,” he said.
