My Kindle Oasis 2017 seems to have broken. I love that it’s screen (Seems to be just plain old “Carta” with no numbers) does not need the backlight on to be readable in even pretty dim lighting.
I recently tried a Kobo and couldn’t believe how grey the screen was and needed the backlight in all conditions other than daylight.
I would just like to see a comparison between all the screens (Carta 1200, Colorsoft, etc) to try and know how it compares to my old Oasis without having to purchase and return it.
Anyone know of a good comparison site like what I’m describing?
Which kobo did you use? If it’s one of the color ones, it’s going to be much more grey than B&W e-readers due to the extra color filter layer. All the color e-readers have this drawback and rely on the front light to improve contrast.
If you don’t need color, just go with the latest gen of a black and white reader, which should be using Carta 1300 I believe, with the software you’d like. Could also go with an older generation if you want to save a few bucks, such as carta 1200, all you would sacrifice is a bit of contrast and some responsiveness.
OK great thanks for the reply and yes it was a color one. I don’t really need color but it still scared me. My Oasis is almost 10 years old now I assumed the tech would have improved dramatically.
Looking at the Boox Go 7 now I think as it’s the most similar to the Oasis without being Amazon
Don’t expect to be blown away, e-ink tech moves very slowly. Most of what’s changed since then is probably improved responsiveness, while maintaining similar levels of sharpness and contrast, and the introductions of other players into the market, such as those based on android.
This may be really unpopular but when I don’t easily find a comparison resource for this kinda stuff I ask an AI to precisely compare things like resolution and features of various e reader screens (Gemini searches Google and doesn’t hallucinate as bad as ChatGPT)
I’m not really looking for specs I’m looking to visually compare.
