We’ve all had one of those moments where we saw something that would make a great photo, but either didn’t have a camera, or couldn’t get the shot in time, so what’s yours? Which missed opportunity sticks in your mind?
I’ve got two, and they’re both quite recent. The first was a cat in my garden. I was sitting in my chair watching TV, and I noticed something in the corner of my eye in the garden. I looked up, and there was a black and white cat strolling along an animal trail towards the house, with a mouse almost perfectly centred in its mouth. The cat was perfectly framed along the path, with trees and greenery in the background that I know from experience blur nicely with my zoom lens. Unfortunately, my zoom lens was attached to my camera in another room, where I’d been taking the photos from the previous day off.
The second was a huge bird, a Cormorant I believe. It was sitting on a large pole in a nearby lake, sunning itself and preening. I took a load of photos over about half an hour or so, but couldn’t get one that I was happy with. They were decent, but the bird was just sitting there, so nothing particularly interesting. I swapped hands with the camera for a while as my arm was aching, and the little bastard stood up, squirted a massive stream of shit into the water, and settled back down. The whole thing only lasted a second or so, and I couldn’t get the camera back up in time. It barely moved again before I had to leave 15 minutes later >.<
Way back in 2006 the building next to the one I lived in caught fire. Because it was old wood structures, fairly close together, everyone had to evacuate.
At one point a firefighter came out on the French balcony at the third floor of the building they were putting out, smoke billowing around them, and a waterfall pouring around their feet down on to the street below, it was epic. In the commotion I remembered to save my laptop, but the camera was sitting at my desk throughout the event…
Ouch! That’s a proper once in a lifetime shot too 😫
I hope everyone was ok
20 years later and I’m still thinking about it…
Luckily there were only material damages, and only minor injuries if any, I would have remembered any casualties.
Was at a bird sanctuary, approaching a blind, and there was this amazing blue kingfisher on a fence about a meter in front. I saw all of its spectacular colours, but I wasn’t ready with my camera at all, and it flew away a few moments after I arrived 😭
I waited for a good thirty minutes, but it never came back (saw it at various other spots along the water, but way too far to get a good photo).
I’m sure they do it on purpose 😂
A Kingfisher is on my wishlist. There’s a wetlands near me that apparently has a resident Kingfisher, but I’ve only ever seen it once, as it was flying off.
Probably northern lights froma couple of weeks ago in central Europe.
I have bunch of Aurora photos, but it would be so cool to have our house with it.
That’s odd, I’m sure I remember taking Aurora photos of my house a few years ago, when the major storm hit the UK, but I can’t find them anywhere 🤷🏼♂️
Welp, took my girlfriend to a secluded waterfall at Reunion to ask her to marry me. On our way down it poured like crazy, we were wet in seconds. So was my camera. The sun came out, the proposal was nice, but I could not take proper pictures of “our” waterfall 😂.
Oops! At least the ring was waterproof 🙈 😂
