I have a standing order with them, but half the time I don’t know whether I owe them money or if they’re overcharging or anything

It’s annoying they don’t just have an option for “I am an adult. I manage my finances. I don’t live hand to mouth. Just charge me for what I use.” without needing to go through the Direct Debit shuffle every so often.

Martin Lewis will tell you all you need to know.

With direct debit your account should be most positive (in credit) in November (maybe around 2 months worth). By the end of March you’ll have used this all up and likely go negative and this will build back up again over the summer.

If it’s wildly different from this then your power use may have been wildly over/underestimated. Then you’ll be due a large refund, or your direct debit will be adjusted up.

Right! So I got a big refund from them just now, but I kept getting emails from them saying “Your account is negative, you owe us X amount. Please pay X amount. We will direct debit Y amount.”

Sending in accurate meter readings, even if you’ve got a smart meter, will allow them to bill you correctly. Bills are often based on estimates and can be inaccurate.

I used to work in the billing department of one of the big suppliers, and saw things like this all the time

With Eon here and I calculated my own usage in November and adjusted my monthly bill to match. Now they are deciding to raise it. Fuck off, not a chance. Gotta log in and turn it back to the amount I set. Its probably because my account touched £3.50 debt on it over winter and immediately they want more money. But its going to start warming up now and my usage will drop to pay that off and some.

At some point it would be nice to get a house battery and find a cheap off peak tariff and then use that through the day.
