Technically… the Vatican is a sovereign nation. Even if it is wholly within Italy.
Its not like the Vatican has a national identity. They aren’t like raising families, building schools and factories, or even growing crops or making stuff for large scale export and trade.
The formation of the Vatican as a country came out of a long period of seige, supposedly, 50 years of political tensions at the ass end of the risorgiamento. The establishment of the Vatican as a country ended a long standing political feud, it solved a political problem. Yeah they’re technically a country but they’re like an old city state. They can’t sustain themselves with GDP like a modern nation.
I’m not arguing with you cuz I was telling a joke originally. They are technically a country. My point is laws and technicalities dont make a nation, the nation, or rather the international community of nations, makes the laws and technicalities. The material basis for nationhood isnt abstract like laws, it is concrete like the billion Catholics all over the world who would go fucking goblin mode if their sovereignty was threatened. In that way they’re special maybe. They dont have a national identity or rational means of production, but they have global religious devotion, and real estate.
