I’d suggest changing the link permission to “anyone can comment” instead, as any ill-intended individual can grief the file as it is now. Then those who moderate the file can approve or deny new entries.

Fair point. I’m keeping an eye on it right now. If it gets out of hand, I’ll do that. Everyone seems to be behaving so far, though. Fingers crossed.

Just did… actually lasted longer than I expected! Someone was removing all the community links and replacing them w/ the code repo links. Restored and cleaned up. The access is now comment only to anyone w/ a link.

Honestly I’m kinda interested in seeing how long everyone behaves. File owner can always keep a backup of the file and change permission and restore if people act a fool.

@demvoter it seems like there has been contact already between that developer and kbin dev… That sounds promising!
Can’t wait to have few apps to chose from. At the end of the day, people like different things and hopefully there will be enough users for them

Thanks for the heads up, but right now that has to be considered a rumor. Until there’s at least a community and/or repo, it’s vaporware.

Sorry if that came off as dismissive. Was just saying Lemmy/Kbin/Squabbles(?) apps are “so hot right now.” Don’t want to chase down every rumor until there’s something more tangible than an “I’m doing this” post. I agree, it sounds great, though!

I’d rather have a comprehensive list, including everything, than a conservative one that’s restricted to just things with a lot of effort lined up. It’s easy to add information showing how far along a client is, checkboxes for different sorts of functionality, and that can give an idea of how much movement there is on a given client, but I think that it’s hard to keep track of all the current efforts right now. Having a comprehensive list makes it easier to find what’s out there.

You’re probably right, but unfortunately my day job doesn’t like me spending all day tracking new apps! I threw this together this morning in the hope that it might help a bit. If there’s a better way, and there probably is, anyone is welcome to tackle it.

I’m confused on how mobile clients work with Fediverse. Do they work with larger “threadiverse” like Lemmy and Kbin themselves or do they access it through specific Lemmy/Kbin instance? If it’s the latter, does this mean they use Lemmy-specific and Kbin-specific APIs?

You would use the app to login to a specific instance, and access federated content through that instances API

Kbin is different code, and Lemmy is different code. Whatever instance you’re on, if you made an account with a Lemmy-based instance then you login to Lemmy and thus use a Lemmy oriented app. Same for Kbin. If you use an instance that’s using Kbin code (I know there are others but I’m only aware of kbin.social right now) then you login to it using a Kbin oriented app.

As for the content, it’s all federated and if it works properly then you should be able to see Lemmy and Kbin content regardless of what app you’re using, with the exception of content from defederated instances (regardless of whether they use Lemmy or Kbin). The sharing of content happens using ActivityPub which, while external of both Lemmy and KBin, are used by both (and many others like Mastodon) for the federation thing to actually take place.

In practice you wouldn’t have to worry about it, except for choosing what app to use and whenever you’re searching for communities on other instances (which on kbin search is something like “[email protected]”). That’s how I understand it at least.

I’m surprised I don’t see more of this. Especially given that they all use ActivityPub. I know kbin is different than Lemmy, but an “all-in-one” app would be great.

Thanks. Currently test driving Jerboa. It’s not bad. Hoping for something that eventually closely matches the design of the Reddit is Fun (Rif) app.

This is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you.

This morning I hopped in to Mlem on iOS and nothing was working, then I noticed it was gone from TestFlight. Luckily I found about Memmy, which works and looks more polished than Mlem. Hopefully we can get a similar iOS app for Kbin as well in the near future.

Man! This is the first I head about the lead dev of Mlem leaving. I hope the project doesn’t get abandoned.

Been really enjoying Memmy. Has been getting updates at a super fast pace and already feels pretty good and featureful. More to go but the dev work has impressed me.

Agreed. So far, I think it’s my favorite of of the dedicated apps. wefwef.app is also pretty good.
