I want the Rape of Nanking to penetrate into public consciousness. Unless we truly understand how these atrocities can happen, we can’t be certain that it won’t happen again.

If the Japanese government doesn’t reckon with the crimes of its wartime leaders, history is going to leave them as tainted as their ancestors. You can’t blame this generation for what happened years ago, but you can blame them for not acknowledging these crimes.”

Denial is an integral part of atrocity, and it’s a natural part after a society has committed genocide. First you kill, and then the memory of killing is killed.

We won’t let them kill the memory of those dying today either. 👍

Recommended. Although this could be classified as “pop history” I found Chang’s writing informative, sober, and even restrained given the horrors she detailed. Important book. Bonus weirdness - one of the good guys was the local Nazi party rep 🤯

Ignore me. My reading skills aren’t as good as I thought they were. My comments are on Chang’s history The Rape of Nanking. Later reprints of that book do have some biographical details in the preface. But I haven’t read the memoir.

I should probably clarify the based level of the books as some of them are intended to be sent to low-info pals and others are for showing off exquisitely damaged book spines on video chat to let everyone know how badass we are (which we are)
