He says that no one should be considered “illegal” and we should change the immigration system, but I think the laws are implemented for a reason and they should go back to where they came from. I’m not even a Conservative. AITA?

The origin of most immigration law stems from either racism/bigotry or worker exploitation. They have nothing to do with making anyone safer, or helping improve lives. So labeling people as illegal absolutely makes you the asshole.
I’m not sure about ass hole… but I believe you may not have all the information to properly make that statement. People. Human beings come here for many different reasons. Some are fleeing death or persecution, some are trying their best to provide for their families any way they can.
Specifically in the last 20 years, the administration only allows so many immigrants of specific countries to enter legally. Right now we are seeing immigrants being arrested at their immigration hearings, refugees being deported, good humans dying in US concentration camps, and US citizens being executed in the streets.
My family was lucky to immigrate to the US when this country was “built on the hard work of immigrants”. Today, it would have been impossible because this admin is actively hunting for immigrants trying to do the right thing.
The only thing that would make you an asshole is the “go back to your home” part. If my family went back to their home to wait for legal immigration, they would have been executed and thrown in a pile of bodies the size of an international airport.
My family didn’t migrate here legally at first and since then, my grandparents became citizens and ALL of their children and grandchildren have gone on to do amazing things.
