Mapping the music infrastructure in Aotearoa

In Aotearoa, musicians are mostly dependent on the same handful of corporate intermediaries and DataFarming platforms as they are in many other countries. I have some ideas about what we could do about that, using existing tech and a bit of community organising. I’ve just started a project of mapping out the independent music ecosystem in Aotearoa, and I’ve been trying to find local independent music forums to list. There used to be a bunch, like punkas.com, and HTown.co.nz, but those parrots are stone dead, and I can’t find any live ones so far. Surely at least some of the kiwi DIY music communities have online space that aren’t on FarceBook or DarthReddit (‘I have changed the deal on API access, pray I don’t change it futher’)? But I’ve tried the somewhat skeletal search systems in both PieFed and Lemmy, and so far, tumbleweeds.

    A good search tool is https://lemmyverse.net/communities

    Unfortunately I don’t think you can search all platforms at once, but it supports Lemmy, Piefed, and Mbin. You click the Lemmy icon to change between them.

    On my phone at least, the Piefed filter doesn’t seem to work, but hopefully you can use this to have another go. I personally didn’t see any NZ music communities, and I’ve never run across one on Lemmy either.

    People tend to go where other people are, and it’s hard to deny that where those people are is Facebook.

    Does Spotify have social elements? That might be something to check. I (loosely) know a few people in bands creating original music, and they tend to post it on Spotify then link to it from Facebook.
