Hey there. Please advise on a city to move to. I have never been to Germany, but I have now decided to move there. Which cities are more suitable for adaptation, finding a job, and safety is also important? I would appreciate any advice and tips.

What job are you looking for? I think the major cities are probably not the best choice, as it is difficult to find an appartment there. Might be a good idea to check a few of the immo websites to see how available housing is in the city you want to move to.

Yes, I think so too. Going to a big city for the first time is a mistake. Practically all my experience is related to the oil and gas industry and I think it will hardly be useful in Germany, so I will look for work as circumstances allow, even if I have never done it before, while also learning German at the same time. From everything I have read, my attention has fallen on Dresden and Düsseldorf.

What are your specific qualifications that are hard to find in someone who’s already here?

I know. And I’m asking you to consider other things first before deciding where to go exactly.

I have spent most of my career in the oil and gas industry. The conditions were good and the pay was solid, but if I’m being honest, I’ve grown tired of it. The constant travel, uniforms, and being far from home have taken their toll. My desire to move to Germany is driven by something else entirely — reasons that are more personal in nature. I understand that I’ll be arriving with nothing and will need to start from the bottom. Any job will do for now, as long as it covers my basic living expenses. Down the line, I’d like to study, develop myself, and build a new career. We’ll see how things unfold from there. I’m aware that competition is fierce, and generally speaking, migrants aren’t always welcomed with open arms — I’m mentally prepared for that. My move is not a whim or some youthful adventure. It is a necessity, driven by circumstances both in life and in family.

I’m not saying what you’re doing is foolish or anything, apologies if it came across like that. But unfortunately it isn’t that easy to immigrate into Germany if you don’t have some particular qualification that has landed you a job with an employer inside the country. You’ll need to already have at least a basic grasp of German and have the necessary funds to provide for yourself until you find a job. German bureaucracy is complicated and strict, they won’t let you just show up one day and wait tables.
