“I’ll be honest with you… The truth is that ever since I retired from the national team… My passion for football has been fading away (he gets emotional and pauses),” says Suárez, wearing a gray T-shirt and sitting in the living room of his home in the United States. He continues: “You keep the desire, that passion for football, for goals, for dreams and you always dreamed of being on the national team. For various reasons, obviously, I made the decision (to retire from the Uruguayan national team), but since I left, the passion for football has faded a bit, so to speak.”
"Obviously, playing for the national team is always what you want. Today you start thinking about it and it starts going round and round in your head. The World Cup is coming up, and if they need you, what do you do? And yes, I’ll never say no to my country; I’ll never say no to my country. I retired from the national team to make way for other players and because I thought there came a point where I could no longer be useful to the team, but if they need me, I’ll never say no to the national team. That’s impossible, as long as I keep playing, as long as I’m still in the game…,” concludes the 39-year-old forward.
