Anyone else feeling a little underwhelmed with the Benn Mathurin experience so far? He played great in the beginning and this very well could just be a prisoner of the moment take but I’m starting to lose trust in him coming through for us in big moments.
It’s unreasonable to think that he would all of the sudden become a better off ball player with less tunnel vision and a great defender all in the span of half a season after the trade deadline and I get that. Hell, it very well could take a few full seasons. But in terms of the contract that he’s looking to sign this summer, I feel like he’s played his way into a more team friendly contract than he would like. As a fan of the team, honestly that’s probably for the best as we’re not really in a position right now to not take a swing on a young promising talent like Mathurin.
I honestly feel like he and Jordan Miller play too similar of roles and if we’re able to keep Jordan miller for cheaper than Mathurin I think that’s the route I’d take as of this moment, but I think that’s a decision that the team will have to make a little further down the road. I’m actually kind of surprised that they seem to have a bit of synergy and play pretty well together.
I would have never thought I’d say this but I honestly kinda trust Kobe sanders more than Benn Mathurin on this team at this point in time, but that’s another story.
In conclusion, Mathurin looks like Sir Isaac Newton out there at times, but I worry that he skews more Terrence Howard more often than I’d like. Would love to hear your thoughts!
