I’m genuinely starting to think ATS systems are built to waste people’s time.

For 3 weeks I kept applying to customer support and customer success roles. Same story every morning: coffee, laptop, 15 new applications, zero replies. By day 19 I had 43 rejections, and 11 of them came in under 10 minutes.

That’s the part that got me.

No human looked at that.

The worst part? A recruiter later told me my background was “strong for customer-facing roles,” but my resume “wasn’t aligned with the job language.” So basically I had the right experience, wrong wording.

I went down a rabbit hole comparing customer service resume examples, resume examples for customer service, and every customer service resume example thread Reddit had.

I even built a messy Google doc with:

  • resume examples customer service
  • example of customer service resume
  • customer service examples for resume
  • resume example for customer service
  • resume customer service examples

Same jobs. Same history. Totally different phrasing.

Big mistake I made before: I wrote tasks, not outcomes.
Stuff such as “answered customer emails” and “handled complaints.”
The fixed version turned that into:

  • resolved 60+ tickets per shift
  • kept CSAT above 94%
  • cut refund escalations by 18%

After wasting another night rewriting it myself, I gave up and used the service from the screenshot (with a discount by the way) because I was honestly tired of losing roles I could clearly do.

They rebuilt the whole thing around ATS phrasing, metrics, and stronger customer service resume examples based on my real work history.

Outcome:
5 interviews in 4 days
2 second-round calls
1 offer at $24/hr by the end of the week

Same person. Same jobs. Different wording.

That’s why this whole system feels broken. Companies say “we can’t find good people,” then auto-trash resumes over phrasing that no normal human would care about.

Did anyone else get punished by ATS over wording instead of actual experience?
How many of your rejections do you think were never seen by a real person?
