A neighbors cat has been entering my yard, and using my outdoor furniture as a bathroom. for a little over a week, I have been finding #1 & #2 on the cushions of the chairs and couch.
it may be multiple cats, but there is one that I’ve seen “in the act” 3 separate times.
Obviously, I’d like this to stop.
My yard is surrounded by an 8-10ft tall brick wall. The cat likes to walk along it, and will jump down into my yard, and jump back up onto the wall to leave.
There are things I can put around the top of the walls that surround my yard, (sort of like rounded, non-sharp plastic spikes) that may prevent the cat from entering my yard.
I’m hesitant because that may mean the cat is unable to walk along the wall, and even if the product description asserts that it’s safe, made of plastic, not sharp, etc. it still looks like it could possibly hurt a cat. I’m also worried that if the cat were to jump over them and into my yard, these plastic spikes could prevent the cat from being able to jump back out.
There is also the option of talking to the owners of the cat. Would anyone have any advice on how to best approach this? I don’t want to be confrontational, or come across as angry, or rude. I would really want to be respectful, friendly, and just hope that we could find some sort of solution.
The neighbors who own the cat are a block over from me, we don’t share a wall between our yards.
I have tried spraying the furniture and surrounding area with cleaners that deter cats from using the area as a bathroom but my furniture continues to be used as a litter box.
If the cat didn’t use my furniture or used as a bathroom, I would be totally happy to have the cat play in my yard.
My highest priorities are stopping the cat from using my yard as a bathroom, having compassion for the cat’s well-being, while also being respectful to the neighbors. I’m not seeking any sort of compensation or anything for damaged furniture, etc. or anything like that.
Any advice on how to prevent the cat from entering my yard, using my furniture as a bathroom, or how to approach a conversation with the owners, is appreciated.
