Hi everyone, I really need some advice.

I have a cat who wears both an AirTag and a Tractive Cat Mini tracker. About three days ago, he got outside and somehow ended up inside my neighbor’s car. I honestly don’t know how—whether he was in the trunk, under the hood, or somewhere else—but my neighbor drove off without realizing the cat was there.

He drove to a village about 160 km (around 99 miles) away from my city. The tracking from both the AirTag and Tractive stopped updating after about 11 km (7 miles) from my home, and since then there has been no signal at all.

It’s now been three days, and I feel extremely guilty and worried. I don’t know if I should try searching for him along that entire distance. The roads are not just one straight route—they branch off in many directions. The only way I might detect the AirTag again is if I happen to pass near it with my phone , but I’m afraid he may be in a remote area with no phones or passing cars nearby, which would explain why there have been no updates.

Yesterday, I went to the last known location where the AirTag updated. It’s actually a somewhat populated area, but unfortunately, I couldn’t find him.

Now I’m really torn. Should I go all the way to that distant village (99 miles away) and try searching there? It feels overwhelming, almost like searching for a needle in a haystack—but at the same time, I can’t shake this guilt.

To make things harder, my neighbor hasn’t been cooperative and won’t clearly tell me the exact route he took. He just says he went to that village and doesn’t provide any details.

What would you do in my situatio
