I have 2 boy cats, orange and gray, a little over 2 years old. They have always eaten fancy feast and were obsessed with it. I of course leave dry food out for grazing. Their typical feeding was half a can in the morning and half in evening.
Recently I purchased a new dry food, Purina One, and they love it. They have been more playful and talkative since the switch. However they are now less interested in fancy feast, which I though could mean I feed them a little less and save money. This morning, however, they turned up their nose at the feast entirely.
Orange is a little more of the food addict and as I was putting the feast away, he came around to start eating so he probably had half a can this morning, after munching on Purina. But gray did not have any feast nor did he munch on Purina, however he did start eating Purina as I started typing this. He has been eating treats normally and yesterday evening I spotted him munching the dry food, but I don’t think he eats as much as orange and it’s harder to catch him eating so I have some concerns he isn’t eating as much. He does seem to be acting normal, if not even more energetic.
Anyway, I am wondering if I am being paranoid or if there is something to worry about with my gray cat in particular.
I also am wondering how to deal with the fancy feast issue - they are expensive and the cats have been leaving quite a bit behind. If I put most of it in a baggie and just give a spoonful in the morning, then I waste a lot of plastic baggies. I know I can experiment and maybe try to give their feast later in the day, but they are kind of in a routine in the morning where they hover around the food bowls and meow for it even if they just sniff it then leave.
Has anyone had this issue where their cats started eating more dry food and they had to adjust wet food? What did you do? Also how do you make sure, in a multi cat household, that both cats are eating enough if you’re relying on dry food grazing?
