Roma and Juventus were level on points with two matches left, the latter host Milan whereas Roma played home to bottom of the table and already relegated Lecce, having lost no match at home.
On the 20th of April 1986, Juventus beat Milan 1-0 thanks to a goal from Michael Laudrup. Meanwhile Roma took the lead over Lecce after only 7 minutes but they eventually went down to 1-3 and then lost at home 2-3, a fatal defeat that gave Juventus a decisive 2-point lead (and eventually the Serie A title).
A week later, on the last match day of the season, discouraged Roma lost at Como finishing 4 points below Juventus.
