New cat is ~4 years old, large, and not terribly food motivated but she’s gone in and out of being territorial as she’s gotten situated. Old cat is ~14, small, and a bit prickly.

One of the ways I’ve been trying to get them to acclimate is to eat together–wet food in separate bowls served relatively near each other.

New cat will eat less, then stop eating and watch the old cat. Old cat will eat most of her bowl, then move on to New Cat’s bowl.

What’s going on here, and is there anything I should be changing? They’re sometimes curious, but they’ve fought a few times and I’ve interrupted them before it can escalate into a fight several times.
