Exposition incoming:

So my buddy, Waylon, is about 2 years old, neutered and used to being a solo cat. He was on the street for the first year of his life, and once adopted he shared a house with another cat for about a month. He’s always been a little territorial, he got along with my roommate’s cat but seems to prefer being alone.

I moved to a new house in November and this house has a glassed in porch. He loves to be out there, because he feels like he can be outside. One of the panels is not glassed, just screened, but has bars to keep anything out, but scent and sound can travel. I open up the sliding door in the morning, and close it before going to bed. He doesn’t stay out there overnight.

So far it’s happened 3 times, once about a month ago and last night and tonight, Waylon has encountered the same outdoors cat. I’m not sure if it’s feral or just an outdoors cat. I suspect feral because I only see it at night, after midnight.

When the cat is around, Waylon is making the same yowling in the video, along with intermittent short hisses (just about a beat in length, and relatively soft), his tail gets really poofed, and gets right up next to the glass.

The outside cat doesn’t seem to antagonize as far as I can tell, just sits on the pathway and looks at Waylon, either right next to the glass or a few feet away.

Waylon is always a vocal cat, so the frequency of sounds isn’t new, but he only makes this particular yowl when he sees this cat.

This leads to my question. I assume this is normal territorial behavior. I’m just not sure what the best way to approach this is.

Should I: A: Only let Waylon out in the screened in porch during the day and close him in the house at nighttime? B: leave it alone, and let Waylon and the other cat just get used to occasionally seeing eachother C: Leave out some food for it and let Waylon and the other cat get accustomed to eachother.

Based on these vocalizations, is he excited to see another cat? Or is he pissed off somebody else is in his territory?
