I have 3 cats , 2 of them is 5 years old and the third one is 3 years old

Is it too late teach them on buttons? I have fluent pet buttons i tried before 2-3 years ago but i wasn’t sure so i cancelled the idea . Also they were chewing on the foam hextiles so is there any alternative ?
