13 years ago, before my grandma adopted her, Aurora was a wild cat. She had to take care of her offspring and herself by hunting rabbits, birds, and mice, or by dodging the occasional stray dog pack. Most people around here see animals as tools; when they “break” or fail to serve their purpose, they just get rid of them.
Dogs and cats often become apex predators when people abandon them in rural areas, given they do not die while crossing a road or from lack of food. Obviously, that’s also a huge problem for the native wildlife of natural reserves, like the one near my grandma’s house.
I’ve heard this is a problem in many countries, and I can’t see how buying a pet is a good idea. If you want a pet, there are plenty of cats and dogs out there waiting for homes. I’m sure any of them would make a good friend.
Sorry about the rant, now back to the picture!
Aurora stays at home, enjoying meals whenever she pleases, sleeping at night with my grandparents, and greeting everyone by demanding to be petted. She had quite a life, and after all that rough time, she now enjoys her retirement in a home she can call her own.
