I’m currently in the reference check stage for a role. I provided 2 references: my manager who already submitted the reference form and a former CEO (startup I worked at) he agreed to be a reference, but hasn’t responded yet after I notified him about the form. They sent it a few hours ago.

I’m wondering what usually happens if one reference doesn’t reply. Do employers wait for both references before making a decision?

Since this is the final stage and I don’t want a non-response from one person to affect my offer. I have an alternative reference who is more of a peer but can suggest him instead.
