Hi all,
This is probably going to be a very long post, but I am just so extremely angry right now, I have no idea how to approach this. I don’t want anyone else applying for positions under this franchise after the absolutely horrible experience I had.
About 2 weeks ago, I (21F if it’s necessary) applied for a barista position at a boba shop on Indeed and I got called an email the same day to schedule for an interview. The interview was scheduled 3 days after I applied. The interview was very easy and the owner was very nice to me. I got sent my training schedule a week after my interview. Two days ago, on Monday, I had my first day of training. I come into the shop at 11AM, the time they open, and I am met with my trainer/assistant manager. She was extremely kind to me, told me about the basic rules to follow and she put me on register duty. My only job for Monday was to take orders and prep the drink cups with labels. The first day was an absolute breeze. On my second day of training on Tuesday, yesterday, long story short, that second shift was terrible. My boss was disrespecting me my entire shift, so here’s a list of everything he did yesterday:
- I came in 30 minutes before opening and as soon as I walk into the backroom, he’s yelling at me and interrogating me on why I’m not wearing a white shirt (I was wearing a gray shirt). I told him I had no idea I had to wear a white shirt because no one told me it was policy and that it wasn’t in the printed rules in the backroom. He then demands that I call my mom to ask her to bring me a white shirt.
- 20 minutes before opening, he has me clean the inside and outside of all the windows and door, sweep the floor, and clean the tables and chairs. While I’m doing all of this, he’s yelling at me to hurry up because “customers will be coming soon”.
- He had me organize and restock the teabags. While I was restocking the teabags, a few customers came in and I took their orders. As soon as the customers had their drinks and left the store, my boss yelled at me and was questioning me on why the teabags were still not organized, even though he saw me take the customers’ orders.
- On multiple occasions, he berated me about my work pace, how I’m falling behind, and how quote, “if you keep working at this pace, you’ll slow everybody down”, all while we were in the presence of multiple customers.
- Customers would come in to order a drink and I would confirm if they actually wanted the drink by repeating their order back to them. While the drink was being made or prepped, I would ask a customer a question like, “do you want whipped cream on your smoothie?” to which they would respond with, “I didn’t order a smoothie” when I know for a fact that they did because they ordered it, I repeated their order back to them, and they confirmed that it was the drink they wanted. My boss chalked this up to me falling behind and not being familiar with the menu, and he was doing this while I was in front of the register while customers were waiting for drinks. I told him that that was what they ordered because I confirmed it and he refused to believe me.
- He would show obvious favoritism towards certain employees. We had a newer hire that struggled with making more complicated drinks and my boss would walk him through step by step on how to make the drink. Meanwhile, he was extremely impatient when I asked questions about how to make certain drinks.
- The store was very quiet because it was noon on a Tuesday, so me and the two other people working (because the owner left momentarily) were on our phones because we had no one come into the store for about 20 minutes. During this, my boss calls the store phone to yell at me for being on my phone, meanwhile the two other people were on their phones as well, and my manager was falling ASLEEP at one of the tables.
- He would often yell at me for not knowing how to make certain drinks, but the drinks he wanted me to learn how to make, nobody was ordering. He wanted me to learn how to make milk teas, but absolutely nobody was ordering milk teas on Tuesday, so I had no opportunity to make them. He told me that I would be trained on how to make certain drinks as soon as customers were ordering them, but no one was ordering them.
- A customer actually witnessed my boss berating me in front of the register and wrote a review about their experience witnessing the interaction. The owner replied to the review, initially apologizing, then immediately went to blame his actions on me, saying how I was “breaking several policies and that wasn’t acceptable”. And just straight up LYING about me to this reviewer. The reply was 100% AI generated because my boss speaks in broken English and doesn’t really know how to use proper punctuation, yet his reply to the review was in exceptional English and he was using punctuation that he’s never used before.
I came home from work, clearly distraught and I told my parents everything that happened and how my boss was treating me the entirety of my shift. A couple hours after I came home, he texted me saying how he no longer wants to continue with training due to my “performance”.
I’m not even upset that I’m no longer “working” for him. I am extremely upset about how he was treating me on my SECOND DAY of training and how he had a problem with me the moment I walked into the store without a white shirt.
I want to write an Indeed review on everything I went through during my TWO DAYS of training and how I strongly suggest that no one applies to any store managed by my boss, because he will just end up treating them the exact same way he treated me. I just don’t know what will be flagged or not. Thank you in advance.
