I saw this post and I wanted to share my story:
A similar thing happened with my cat three years ago. He was five years old and was sleeping when my wife entering the room startled him. Something strange happened, and he started attacking us. I managed to get him into a carrier to take him to the vet. The vet gave him a sedative to calm him down, but when he woke up a few hours later, he was still aggressive.
I put him back in the carrier and took him to the University Veterinary Clinic. While we were waiting to be seen, he escaped inside the car and we couldn’t catch him. Whenever he saw someone, he tried to attack through the car window. The doctors from University said that they never saw a case like that. By the next morning, he had grown tired and the doctors were able to sedate him. They suspected rabies, so they held him for one month. However, the day after he was caught, he was calm again.
After that month, he underwent several neurological exams, but everything came back normal. We took him home and built him a large catio. He was doing well. Since then, I have moved into a house where he has his own dedicated room that we don’t live in. He is doing well now and is very lovely; he has only had two or three small episodes since the first incident.
Despite this, we can’t let him live in the main part of the house with us because we can’t risk him becoming aggressive while we are sleeping. Now, he dont like if we are moving him to clean his space or when he see people that he dont know. We can’t put him down, as he was our first pet and we are verry attached to him, we will make this only if he will snap again and he will not stop.
My goal now is simply to provide him with a high quality of life and a safe environment, while ensuring the rest of our household, and our three other cats, remain protected.
