Trigger warning

My 7yr old indoor cat, Tommy became pregnant after getting out about 4-5 weeks ago. I noticed she was pregnant last week right before I had to leave for 3days (fri-mon). I called to make her an appointment right away and took her today, Thursday.

Long, horrifying story short, I went into my closet and discovered a small kitten who had passed away. There were other things that indicated Tommy may have given birth in there. The kitten looked a few days old, and I’m thinking passed away today or maybe yesterday, she was clean and a healthy looking weight. I’m wondering if being away from Tommy all day is the cause of the kittens death.

What is concerning me the most is I only found one kitten. I went through the closet and didn’t find anything else and if she did give birth in there it was not very messy at all. I looked everywhere and have found anymore kittens or blood or anywhere else that looked like she gave birth there.

If I call the vet, would they be able to tell me if they terminated her pregnancy? Is it possible she only had one kitten?

I should have taken her to be spayed years ago. She’s had a litter before and when I tried to terminate that time, her blood work came back with concerning results so we did not follow through with the procedure. 100% my fault for letting her out also. All of my other cats are spayed/neutered. I am ashamed it took me this long to spay her.
