My new kitten is scared but I need to give him medicine- will it influence how he perceives me?
Hello, two days ago me and my boyfriend adopted a rescued kitty. This is my first cat but I fell in love with him the first time I saw him on a photo. He’s around 2 months old and was left in the bushes next to a road. He was first taken to a veterinary clinic, then after 3 days was taken to a foster home for one night, and the next day I finally went to pick him up.
We don’t have a lot of space for him to give him a separate room, but we managed to organize one area for him that’s not directly in the living room/kitchen; I put his litter box and all other essential there for him, but also set up other hiding spots for him around the corridor and the living room.
The thing is, since he arrived he’s been exploring only at night and then go and hide under the sofa. I need to give him medication in the morning and evening because of eye and ear infection - the thing is I’m very scared of him being scared of me, I know I shouldn’t bother him now that he’s in new environment, give him time… but I need to give him the medication and I feel like me forcing the touch makes it worse for him, I’m afraid this will influence how he perceives me.
When I finally manage to pick him up, he doesn’t run away as long as I’m wearing a bathrobe and hide him in between the layers - he lets me touch himself and doesn’t hiss at me or anything.
One positive thing that happened today is that he actually went outside while I was in the room (sitting on the floor on the other side) and he got interested by the nearby scratching post (he didn’t use it but he sniffed around it).
I’d be grateful for any advice, thank you 🙂
The photo is him when he went out today, I managed to take a quick snap.
