I recently accepted a job offer and am now going through a background check that includes employment and education verification.

I’m worried because during interviews I said I was still employed at my previous job. In reality, my contract had ended a few months earlier. Also, while I worked day to day with the company I supported, my actual employer of record was a separate staffing/contracting company, and I never clearly explained that.

A few relevant details:

  • My contract ended around the same time I had a serious back injury and surgery recovery.
  • I have now entered the most accurate information I can into the background check.
  • I never personally filled out a full formal application for this job, although it looks like one may have been partially created on my behalf.

My main question is: if the background check shows that my employer of record was the contracting company and that my work ended earlier than I said, is that usually an automatic rescind, or does it often turn into a clarification / manual review situation?

I know I should have been more accurate earlier, so I’m not really looking for moral judgment. I’m mainly trying to understand how this is usually handled in practice and whether anyone has been through something similar.
