I’ve seen a lot of people post about litter box issues. Most of them say their cats will not use the litter box and they have multiple cats, but I have the opposite problem. I have four kittens who will be a year old in june. At the moment I have two extra large litter boxes. They have no problem using them. I was planning on adding another one when they got bigger because I figured they would need more room and options, but they only use one of them at a time. I cleaned them several times a day except on Monday and wednesday. I work 13 hours shifts, so they get cleaned right before I leave the house and as soon as I get home, but every other day I scoop it multiple times. Sometimes immediately after they use it. When I come home from my long shift it’s like they’ve chosen one of the litter boxes to use for the day. One of them will be almost full and the other one will have only been used once or twice. They don’t always choose the same litter box. Sometimes it’s the one in the bedroom and sometimes it’s the one in the living room.
Both boxes are the exact same size. They are cleaned at the same time. They have the same litter. The same amount of litter. Etc. There is absolutely not a single difference between the two of them besides the location.
At this point in time I’m not even worried about getting another litter box because they are obviously fine with what I’ve got. I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I would think that they would more or less go back and forth between the two of them choosing whichever one has been used the least when they need to go, but they just don’t do that.
Also, do they go through growth spurts? Like I said, they are almost a year old and for the past few days they have been eating more of their wet food at one time then they have in the past. I usually split one can between the four of them twice a day and they would always leave a little bit on their plates to go back for later. Now, they are literally licking their plates clean. They have access to dry food 24/7. I have already switched them to adult food. I did it gradually and now they are just on dry adult cat food. Could it be the difference in the amount of calories in their dry food between the adult and kitten food causing them to want more of the wet food or could it be something like a growth spurt? Should I give them a little bit more wet food when I feed them? I would prefer not to. They aren’t starving, but if it’s something I should maybe do I don’t care to. I just don’t want them to become overweight.
Pictures of the offending kittens just because.
